Patients can find high-quality dental crowns in River Ridge from Dr. Kerry Plaisance and Dr. Reese Bostick, but how do dental crowns work? What does the procedure for dental crowns involve? How do you care for your new crown? What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that may be made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, gold, or base metal alloys. Each material offers its own advantages. Porcelain crowns are generally preferred for restoring damaged or missing teeth in the front of the mouth, while gold is the strongest and gentlest on the natural tooth structure.

The dental crown is applied over the weakened tooth to restore its form and function. When the crown replaces a missing tooth, it is bonded securely on top of a dental implant.

What Is a Dental Crown Used For?

Dental crowns commonly perform the following functions:

  • Holding together parts of a broken tooth
  • Restoring a decayed tooth when there is not enough room for a filling
  • Restoring a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Replacing a single missing tooth
  • Correcting cosmetic issues, like worn, misshapen, or stained teeth

What Is the Procedure for a Dental Crown?

The procedure for a dental crown will require two or three visits to Plaisance & Bostick Family Dentistry. The first visit is used to plan for your dental crown and prepare your tooth for its placement. Preparation requires the removal of the tooth enamel to make room for the crown to fit properly with the surrounding teeth. A temporary crown is worn between visits, while the permanent device is created in a trusted lab. Once it’s ready, you’ll return to our office for the final placement of your new dental crown.

How Do I Care for My Dental Crown?

After your dental health has been restored with your new crown, you’ll need to make sure you’re maintaining excellent dental hygiene habits. With proper care, you can ensure your crown stays healthy and intact for years to come and reduce your need for further restorative care in the future.

Good dental hygiene requires brushing for two minutes after each meal or at least twice a day, flossing daily, and twice-annual visits to your dentist. Pay special attention to the area around the base of your crown as you’re flossing to remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria that cause decay and infection.
